What is the one dish that is not really craved by anyone for daily meal, but it is the first thing that everyone will look for during Hari Raya? It is none other than Malay delicacy and heritage food, Ketupat! It may not be everyone’s favourite, but it is a must-have dish for Hari Raya. Never underestimate the taste of Ketupat with side dishes as you might ask for more and more once you’ve had a taste of it. So, here is an easy ketupat recipe for your Raya preparation! What is Ketupat?
Have you ever wondered what Ketupat or Ketupat Nasi actually is? It is rice that is wrapped in a diamond shape using Woven Palm leaves. Then, it is boiled for hours and as the rice cooks, the grains expand to fill the pouch and the rice becomes compressed to soft cakes.
There are other types of Ketupat that you might want to know, which is Ketupat Palas and Ketupat Bawang. Ketupat Palas is made from glutinous rice and it is wrapped in triangular shape using Palas leaves. As for Ketupat Bawang, it is basically the same as Ketupat Nasi, but it is wrapped in Bawang (onion) shape.
You can savour Ketupat in any way you want as it goes well with any dishes. Have it with any Rendang and Serunding (dried Rendang) or dip in Kuah Kacang and Lontong? You name it! One thing for sure, you know you want to make and eat it when it is mouthwatering just by looking at it.
- Cook all the ingredients in a rice cooker.
- Put the cooked rice into a square container and press it.
- Press with waxed paper/cling wrap until the rice is all tight/compressed. Wait for it to cool down and put in the refrigerator.
- Cut into squares when it is cool.
- Garnish with cut cubes of red onion and cucumber. Alternately, serve with barbeque satay sauce.
